Anglo Indian Finely Carved Sandalwood & Sedeli Mosaic Box


A lovely and rare late Anglo Indian finely carved sandalwood mosaic box with sedeli decoration. The repeating geometric patterns of Sadeli Mosaic give it its beauty and richness and this decorative technique is a type of micro mosaic featuring repeating geometric patterns and is a highly skilled craft, it has had a long history in India and the Middle East with early examples dating back to the 16th century. The top is highly decorative and has a border of sedeli work framed with faux ivory and has foliage decoration around all sides.

The carving on the top depicts three figures and all around the box is a sedeli and faux ivory decoration. The interior lid and base are lined with red velvet.  Some of the mosaic and the faux ivory is damaged commensurate with its age and use – please see photos.
